Old film processing

Old film processing refers to the process of developing photographic film that is past its expiration date.

Considerations

Old film, or film that a long way beyond its expiry date (in some instances instances many decades old) usually requires very specialist handling. There can be pitfalls, for example, identical emulsions in a different format may not give similar results. Many external factors cause the physical degradation of film emulsion, such as exposure to air and prolonged storage in a warm environment. It is important to think of the storage conditions as well as the film type and process.

When developing an older film oneself, it is important to know or research the film type, brand, format, and approximate age before proceeding. Overall quality may need to be sacrificed to produce recognizable images.

The objective in developing old film on a commercial basis is obviously to produce the best possible results from any film type. The few worldwide providers of this service have records such as those described above, and also the experience to know how to deal with any given type of film.

Digital enhancement

Digital enhancement of the old film is the next step after processing. Deterioration can be reduced using manipulation software and the contrast raised for example, if it was not possible to do this during development. Colour correction is also much simpler with digital methods than chemical methods.

Providers

Today, there are generally accepted to be three major laboratories worldwide (one each in USA, Canada, and UK) providing services for the majority of old film types, although occasionally smaller laboratories may accept unusual or obscure films on an informal basis.

Researching the film type you have is highly recommended before choosing a provider. It is also recommended to ask questions of any laboratory regarding the expected results.
