Oakville Academy for the Arts

The Oakville Academy for the Arts (OAA) is a school that trains in music, dance, fine arts, music theatre and has an award winning Reggio inspired Preschool and Kindergarten program. The school has recently won the 2008 Best Dance School in Oakville as well as Best Music School and Best Preschool. The studio, well known for its highly acclaimed competitive dance program, is now six years old and is currently owned by Heidi McMeeken.
Dance Program
The school is renowned for its very successful competitive company, however also has a great recreational division. The competitive division competes in about 3 to 5 competitions annually, as well as occasionally performing at local or charity events. The studio attends a nations every other year. The studio has been very successful competing both nationally and internationally. There are several competitive groups as follows (from youngest to oldest): sweet pea, Munchkin, pre-mini, novice pre-mini, Mini, Junior, novice junior, Intermediate G, Intermediate M, novice Intermediate and Senior. It is compulsory for competitive students to take jazz and ballet classes (R.A.D. method), however there are 'add on' classes, such as tap, contemporary, hip-hop, lyrical, and extended lines (available in jazz, tap, hip-hop, and lyrical). Students can also have 'extra choreography' and take solos, duets, trios, or small groups. More dance genres are available to students doing extras; for example, a student with acro or tumbling experience could be offered an acro or open solo, even though those genres are not offered in groups. Currently, Oakville Academy's competitive dance coordinator is Kasey Bowers, and the dance director is Aimee Hamilton. Currently they have many other dance teachers: Monique Romasco, Andrew Prashad, Alex Herzog, Katie Watson. The studio also attends and hosts guest choreographers.
