Numeridex

Numeridex Incorporated, started in the City of Chicago as a partnership in 1965. It subsequently incorporated as an Illinois Corporation in August of 1967. Originally it concentrated in the manufacturing of metal cabinets used for the storage of NC (numerically controlled) polyester control tape. Later the Company expanded its product line to include NC control tape, and eventually became one of the largest distributors of this product in the United States.

In the mid 1970's Numeridex moved to Wheeling, IL (where it is located today), and in 1977 it introduced the first microprocessor based NC programming system using the Intel Corporation's 8088 Single Board Computer. The software was embeded in two EPROMS (erasable programmable read only memory chips), with a total capacity of 4 kilobytes. The hardware of the original system included a tape punch manufactured by Data Specialties, Inc. which in later years would become Zebra Technologies, and a tape reader mechanism. Following this introduction, Numeridex produced many newer and more sophisticated microprocessor based NC programming systems until in 1989 the Company sold its electronics products division (maker of NC programming systems) to Automation Intelligence, Inc., and it again concentrated its efforts to the distribution of NC supply products to manufacturing companies.

As a result of advances in computer related technologies, NC essentially became obsolete and was replaced by the newer CNC (computerized numerical control), which elimitated the use of tapes and diskettes as the medium to store NC programs. Consequently Numeridex's management decided to concentrate its efforts into two divisions which today represent the main activities of the Company:

The Barcode Products Division, has as its mission the national distribution of a complete line of Barcode related products including thermal transfer printers, thermal transfer labels, direct thermal labels, verifiers, scanners and label and barcode software. Among the brands represented by the Barcode Division of Numeridex are: Zebra, Datamax, Sato, Intermec and Teklynx.

The Plotter Supplies Division, distributes nationally a complete line of papers, films, inks, pens and other supplies to support wide format printers. Additionally this division offers blueprint media and engineering copier papers. Among the brands represented by the Plotter Supplies Division of Numeridex are: Hewlett-Packard, CalComp, Encad, Epson, Xerox and Others.
