Necessity Village

During the first week of April 2012, Occupy Santa Ana staged a protest for homeless rights dubbed as "Necessity Village" under the belief that human necessities (such as sleeping and access to bathroom facilities) cannot be illegal. Santa Ana, located in Orange County, California has a large population of homeless citizens who are regularly targeted by the local police department. Though it is illegal for police officers to cite homeless people for "camping" if there are no shelter beds available, it happens daily. The department claims that shelter beds are available and uses that to justify their tickets.
In this protest, Occupiers called the shelter list provided by the city to ask for shelter beds, then marked the results on a board. These calls were conducted every hour for the entire duration of the protest and Occupiers posted the debriefings on Ustream.
