Naziyah Mahmood is a Scottish astrophysicist and aerospace engineer who has worked on European Space Agency (ESA) missions and is known for her contributions in promoting gender equality in the STEM fields. She is also a poet, short story writer, actress and model. Early life Academia Naziyah Mahmood was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and is from a mixed cultural background (Pakistani and Arabian lineage). She attained an Honours degree is Physics with Astrophysics, and then attained a Postgraduate degree in Space Mission Analysis and Design (Aerospace Engineering) from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. Career Having carried her interests in space systems forward, Naziyah went on to work as an Earth Observation Engineer and Mission Analyst on ESA missions such as CryoSat-2 and ESMO, as well as others such as Moonbase-X. She has also held a post of STEM Development Manager, through which she worked to promote gender equality in the STEM sector through partner collaborations and through becoming an inspirational speaker at STEM based events. Among other awards, Naziyah was recently chosen as one of the 30 under 30: Inspirational Women in Scotland by the YWCA Scotland. Martial Arts Growing up partially blind, Naziyah decided to pursue her passion for martial arts from a young age, through which she gained a keen sense of awareness which has enabled her to get around her day-to-day life. Under the instruction of Thomas Clark, Naziyah became proficient in several martial arts systems, and her specialization to date was more so on weapons arts. Actress and Modelling In 2014, Naziyah appeared as the character Nour-el-ain (a phoenix) in the online TV series, Caledonia Mortal Souls. Directed by Amy Hoff, the series follows a crime investigation organisation called Caledonia Interpol, composed of mythological creatures, who investigate crimes in the fairy world. The ten-part short series is an adaption of the second novel of the Caledonia book series by the director, The third installment to the series, Burns Night (2016), was adapted into a feature film, in which Naziyah appears once again as the Arabian mythical creature. Naziyah has also modelled, primarily as a martial arts model, for an array of different artistic photographers.
