Nathan Thoms, born , is an American film critic and author in the fields of popular culture, television, and political science. He earned a BA with High Honors from the University of Maine in 2005 and a degree from the Honors College for his Honors thesis and its defense entitled, Machiavelli Meets Mayor Quimby: Political Commentary During the First Season of The Simpsons, 1989-1990, which was later published with some adaptations as a book entitled, Machiavelli Meets Mayor Quimby: Political Commentary in the First Season of The Simpsons.
Early Life
Thoms was born November 25, 1980 at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York, US to Susan Thoms and Edward Thoms.
The family moved around New York a bit until moving to Boston, Massachusetts.
Following some troubles, Susan and Edward separated and Susan moved with Nathan and his younger sister Erica to the Belfast, Maine area, where they have resided ever since.
Education
High School
From 1995 until graduation in 1999 Nathan attended high school at Belfast Area High School in Belfast, Maine. Among the traditional subjects, he was an active member of Concert, Jazz, Marching and Kennebec Valley Honors Bands, and studied Latin extensively.
College
Thoms attended the University of Maine entering in 1999, majoring in history. He was invited and accepted into what was then the Honors Program, and later became the Honors College, changing majors soon after matriculation to Political Science. He continued his study of Latin and also began studying German.
During his time with the University of Maine, Thoms was a very active student with his extra-curricular activities. He auditioned for, and was accepted into, the University of Maine Symphonic Band under the direction of Curvin Farnham. Elected Vice President of the Stodder Hall Governing Board, he organized one of largest independent concerts on campus in 2000.
He was elected to the University of Maine General Student Senate in 2001 and quickly took on leadership roles, including membership on the Ad-hoc Alumni Relations Committee and becoming the chairman of the Committee on Student Affairs.
Thoms graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with High Honors in 2005 and subsequently entered its graduate program in Public Administration.
Graduate School
He is presently in the course of studying for a Master of Public Administration degree and was initiated as a brother of Theta Chi Fraternity in 2006.
Books and Publications
Thoms' first, and so far only, book is entitled Machiavelli Meets Mayor Quimby: Political Commentary in the First Season of The Simpsons with ISBN 978-1411678279. He is said to be working on publishing a collecting of essays in the near future.
Having worked for the campus newspaper as its film critic in the past, Nathan now publishes his movie reviews independently at his FauxNixon website.
