Nanerpus (alternate spellings: Nannerpus, Nanerpuss, Nannerpuss) is the star of the Denny's 2009 Super Bowl advertisement. Featuring the octopus-shaped banana peel seated on top of a stack of pancakes, the commercial was not eligible for Superbowl Ad Polls because it was aired right after the actual game, but is has become one of the most popular and beloved. The creature has the ability to sing and move with the help of thin strings attached to its floppy yellow limbs. Its voice resembles that of a hefty man. Nanerpus seems to be made from a banana peel, though its face resembles that of a male homo sapien because of the jet-black mustache. Nanerpus is a fragile creature; it clumsily removes its right eye during the performance but does not seem to notice and continues the catchy jingle, as follows: "You can call me Nanerpus, Nanerpus! And guess what? I love pan-" Nanerpus's song is abruptly cut off by the voice of Burt Reynolds. One can assume that Nanerpus's secret love is "pancakes", since he appears to be seated upon six or more of these tasty breakfast items, which Denny's reportedly serves on a daily basis. The Nanerpus spot can be viewed at this external site It was created by the award-winning advertising agency and absurdist directors The Perlorian Brothers and filmed by cinematographer Robert Yeoman. As the Nanerpus phenomenon grew in the days following the Superbowl broadcast, many commentators have speculated on its significance in advertising and popular culture
