Mucking Out A Stable

Mucking out is a task that is performed daily to ensure a horse's welfare and wellbeing. This task consists of removing manure and wet bedding from the horses' stable. Below you will discover the methods of the basic mucking out skills.
MUCKING OUT SHAVINGS
You Need:
Shovel
Wheelbarrow
Shavings Fork
Sweeping Brush
Shavings
METHOD:
1) With the shovel, remove all large piles of dung, trying not to scoop up too many clean shavings as you do this.
2) Again, use the shovel and get rid of all the wet bedding within the clean shavings.
3) Now it is time to use the shavings fork. Scoop up all small pieces of dung and gently shake to remove the shavings from your scoop, while removing dung.
4) Spread shavings out to form a bed, and then decide whether you do or do not need shavings.
5) If you need them, collect your shavings and spread them around at the back of the box.
6) Remove shavings bag from the stable.
7) Using the shovel, evenly spread the shavings around and neaten the edges. You may also flatten it down if you want to, but this is not a nessesity.
8) Sweep the dust and extra dung out of the stable with the sweeping brush.
MUCKING OUT STRAW
You Need:
Straw
Straw Fork (Pitch Fork)
Shovel
Sweeping Brush
1) Remove large pieces of dung with shovel.
2) Any smaller pieces of dung or wet bedding can be removed with the straw/Pitch Fork.
3) Again, decide if you need more bedding.
4) Lay down more straw and spread it around with the Straw/Pitch Fork.
5) Sweep the box for a tidy, dust free box!
NOTE: Both these methods are easier if there is not a horse in the stable.
