Deshamanya Doctor h.c. Phil. Aruna Shantha Abeygoonewardana is the chairman of PINA Help for Sri Lanka and one of the most socially committed philantrophists to his country. Background Born on September 10, 1957 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, his Father Nestin Silva Abeygoonewardana, was a strong Buddhist follower who raised his children on those principles. At the age of 17, he gave his second son the opportunity study in Europe, where Aruna Abeygoonewardana learned German and English and met many of the people with whom he later founded PINA. After returning to Sri Lanka in 1985, he worked as a NTG Lecturer. During this time of traveling all over the island, he found his true calling - helping people, who cannot help themselves. For this purpose, he founded the humanitarian INGO PINA and has been the inspirational force behind it for the past 20 years. He gained a respected position through his island-wide actions and charitable appearances on TV. His most recent achievement has been the construction and management of a children village for tsunami and war affected, as well as socially deprived children. Honors For his dedication and lifes work, alongside a number of honorary society awards, he received the prestigious Deshamanya - Vishwa Keerthi - Lanka Puthra Designations by the Sri Jayewardenepura Commemoration Society in December 2006, for his undying efforts in helping the needy people of Sri Lanka. Furthermore he was awarded an Honorary Degree as Doctor of Philosophy by the Open International University for Complementary Medicines & Medicina Alternativa (2007).
