Mrinal kaul

Mrinal Kaul (b. 1981-) read for a B.A. (Hons) in Sanskrit at St Stephen's College, University of Delhi (2000-2003), and proceeded to a Certificate Course in Manuscriptology, an Advanced Course in the Indian Grammatical Traditions and an incomplete M.A. in Sanskrit (with specialisation in Nyaya) at the Center for Advanced Study in Sanskrit, University of Pune (2003-04).

Mrinal returned to St Stephen's College, earning a further M.A. in Sanskrit (with specialisation in Indian Philosophy) (2004-2006), and subsequently an M.St. in Oriental Studies (Classical Indology) from St Cross College, University of Oxford (2006-07).

Mrinal maintains his interest in Indian philosophical literatures, particularly the Kashmirian Saiva schools, and the Trika system of Abhinavagupta. He is interested in the Kashmiri and English languages and literatures, and is a multi-lingual poet, with wide-ranging compositions in English, Sanskrit and Kashmiri.

Mrinal was initially involved in the study of the Ancient Indian Sciences, and subsequently shifted his interest to Indian philosophy. Mrinal is an independent researcher working on several aspects of Kashmir studies, such as language studies in Kashmir, the Saiva schools of Kashmir, and Literature and Rhetoric of Kashmir.

Mrinal was invited by the Prasar Bharati Broadcasting Corporation of India, Radio Kashmir, Jammu, to deliver a series of talks on the Culture and Literature of Kashmir. In all, nine talks were broadcasted in the language of Kashmiri, Sanskrit and Hindustani on different topics. Mrinal worked as a part of University Grant's Commission Project on the Concordance of Upanisads at the Center for Advanced Study in Sanskrit, University of Pune (2004), and worked as a Research Associate at the Abhinavagupta Research Library, Varanasi (2008). He was also Chairperson of the Cultural Session of the Kashmiri Pandit Youth Convention, organised by Panun Kashmir Movement, Jammu & Kashmir (2000).

Mrinal has been awarded and nominated for several prizes: nominated for India's Vikas Ratna Award by the National Economic Development & Growth Society, New Delhi (2002); awarded Swami Vivekananda Chicago Lecture's Centenary Prize by St Stephen's College for service, Indian culture, personal values and academics (2003); nominated for the award of Poet of the Year 2004 by the International Society of Poets, Florida in recognition of the publication of best English poetry (2004); awarded Asha Chatterjee Prize by St Stephen's College for distinguished academic work, strength of character and leadership qualities (2006); awarded Kishan Pershad Memorial Prize by St Stephen's College for academics and interest in extracurricular activities (2006). Mrinal has also been awarded a number of Scholarships and Fellowships from India and abroad.
