Monkeypig

Swedish indie/shoegazing band, described in a review by the Posies, as a mixture of Heaven 17 and My Bloody Valentine. The band themselves mentioned Postpunk, The Smiths and The Cure as influences. Monkeypig released the 5-track CD ”Under the influence of bad weather” (Borderline Records) in 1994, and later a single on the UK-based Pandemonium Records in 1996.

”Under the influence of bad weather” has affective guitar melodies with dreamy vocals and can easily fall under the shoegazing category. A critic wrote; ”They are more interested in the cracks of the scene floor, than in their audience”. The single however contains two tracks ”Human Test Driver”and ”Am I an Onion?”, that is way more uptempo and heavy. Still in a pool of sound the songs are more direct than the first 5-track. The producer Adam Kviman had experience with heavier acts (Clawfinger etc.), and put all that competence into Monkeypig's pop/indie melodies.

On a less interesting note, while recording ”Human Test Driver”and ”Am I an Onion?” the guitarist had sciatica and had to be carried back an forth into the recording studio in great pain. The drummer had a breakdown and left the band, and to keep the interest and focus the vocalist sang the songs in the nude.

”Head on fire” was due for release 1997, but Pandemonium went bankrupt, and the single was never released.

In 2002, parts of the band released ”Poor Odysseus” in France under the name The Songs.
