Miriam Berkley is a photographer who has taken pictures of Stephen Hawking, Margaret Atwood, Susanna Clarke, Ha Jin, Doris Lessing, David Malouf, Grace Paley, Neil Gaiman, Orhan Pamuk, among others. She was born in the Bronx, attended Hunter College high School, the City College of New York (one year), and Cornell University. She did a year of graduate work in psycholinguistics at Cornell University before going abroad and abandoning her degree. She later received a teaching degree (MS) from Ferkauf Graduate School of Yeshiva University. Before turning to photography full-time, she worked as a freelance writer on the arts, especially about books, publishing her book reviews and author interviews in 'such publications as Publishers Weekly and The Chicago Sun-Times.
