George O. Udeani is a pharmaceutical scientist and pharmacist specializing in cancer drug development and drug discovery. He has published several scientific research articles that have been cited in scientific literature. His most cited article (1779 times, according to Google Scholar 2074 times) is a publication in Science on cancer chemopreventive activity of resveratrol, on which he was third author (out of 12). He also authored and self-published ', which is due to be released in January 2010. Udeani has been an assistant professor with the University of Illinois at Chicago. Udeani and colleagues discovered and developed four anti-cancer agents including betulinic acid, which originates from a tree, Ziziphus mauritiana, from Zimbabwe. Initial preclinical pharmacokinetics studies for this agent were carried out by Udeani. This agent is currently in clinical trials for the treatment of melanoma skin cancer in the United States; deguelin, which was derived from an African (Kenya) plant, Mundulea sericea, resveratrol, and tephrosin. Tephrosin, a rotenone, is a known compound from two different sources: the African plant Mundulea sericea and the North American plant Amorpha fruticosa. Its discovery via an in vitro mechanism by Udeani is the first of this nature by any scientist. Biography Udeani was born in Cameroon and was raised in Cameroon, Nigeria, and The United States. He attended a Catholic British Boarding high school, Sacred Heart College, in Mankon, Bamenda, Cameroon. He then attended the University of Minnesota from which he graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy and a Doctorate degree in Pharmacy. From 1994 to 2000, Udeani was a post doctoral faculty research scholar with the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, and the Program for Collaborative Research in the Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago. Udeani then obtained a D.Sc. in Cancer Research from Warnborough University, England.
