Mike Day (Navy SEAL)

Mike Day is a U.S. Navy SEAL and the author of the book Perfectly Wounded.
As a U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, and the Platoon Chief of SEAL Team FOUR's Foxtrot Platoon, Mike led a team of SEALs and Iraqi Army Scouts on more than 140 Direct Action missions in the vicinity of Fallujah, Iraq from October 2006 to April 2007. These missions resulted in the interdiction of several insurgent networks in the Euphrates River Valley, and included the capture of one theater-level high-value target.
In the early morning hours of April 6, 2007, several kilometers northeast of Fallujah, Chief Day entered a compound of Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQIZ) fighters who belonged to a cell responsible for ambushing coalition ground forces and shooting down coalition aircraft. Upon entering the compound, he sustained 27 separate gunshot wounds (11 that impacted his body armor, and 16 that directly impacted his body) in addition to shrapnel from a fragmentation grenade. Using his secondary weapon, a 9-mm pistol, Chief Day then mortally wounded four AQIZ fighters before securing the rest of the location, ensuring the safety of six non-combatants and two detainees, before walking onto a medevac helicopter of his own accord.
For his actions on that mission, Day received a Silver Star in 2007, which was later upgraded to a Navy Cross.
During the assault on April 6, 2007, Joseph "Clark" Schwedler, a U.S. Navy SEAL from Crystal Falls, Michigan, was killed in action by enemy gunfire, along with one Iraqi Army scout.
Day retired from the Navy in 2010, as a Senior Chief Petty Officer with more than 21 total years of service. Today, he is a motivational speaker, health advocate, and brand advocate with the Virginia-based organization DayLight, LLC.
