Michal Novotny

Michal Novotny (b. 1984) is a Czech-Lebanese composer and conductor currently residing in Montreal, Canada. His composition teachers over the years have included Chris Paul Harman, Brian Cherney, Jean Lesage and Alexandra Fol. At present, Novotny serves as the titular conductor of New Earth Voices in Montreal and the McGill Savoy Society.
Novotny has written over twenty works, which have been performed multiple times, by performers and ensembles such as Daria Binkowski, Erik Carlson, Martin Karlicek, Michelle Nam, Alexandra Fol, Quatuor Bozzini, the Cantata Singers of Ottawa with Capital BrassWords under Chris Hossfeld, the McGill Wind Symphony Orchestra under Alain Cazes, the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble under Jean-Michael Lavoie, the LaCeilagh chamber choir under Michael Zaugg and the Quatuor Bozzini.
Shell Shocked (2009), commissioned especially by the Cantata Singers for their Remembrance Day concert "For the Fallen", depicts the traumatic psychological repercussions of war on a veteran, using a quotation from Wilfrid Owen's poem "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori", and was hailed "a harrowing, if ingenius piece..." by the Ottawa Citizen critic Richard Todd.
