After serving sometime in the private sector van Holst began working as a Math and Science Teacher in the Thames Valley District School Board. In 2014 van Holst left his job teaching in order to pursue a seat on the London City Council. On October 27th, 2014 Van Holst was elected to the London City Council by a twenty point margin above his closest competitor. He was then re-elected to his position in 2018 with more than double the votes earned by the next highest contender. As a City Councillor he pushed to turn the position of City Councillor from a part time job into a full time job. He argued “We face enough challenges in London that we need people to focus their time on it. I think we’re a big enough city that this shouldn’t be just something you do (in your spare time).” This proposal was narrowly defeated in a 8-7 vote against. Later that year Van Holst was nominated to be the candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada in the 2019 Canadian federal election in the riding of London-Fanshawe. Van holst stated that he would take a leave of absence without pay from his position as a London City Councillor once the writ for the election had dropped.
