Michael Schlein

Michael Schlein (b. March 10, 1961) is the President and CEO of Accion, a pioneer and nonprofit leader in global microfinance and impact investing. Schlein has over 25 years of experience in the international banking, management, and public service sectors. Prior to working at Accion, Schlein served as President of Citigroup’s International Franchise Management. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1984. As Smith Barney merged with Salomon Brothers and Travelers merged with Citibank, he took on a variety of responsibilities in his ensuing years with the newly created Citigroup. Schlein joined Accion’s Board of Directors in 2007 and was a member of its Executive Committee. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Managed by the Smart Campaign, a global initiative that promotes strong client protection principles across the microfinance industry, this new process ensures that microfinance institutions demonstrate their adherence to those principles.
In April 2012, Schlein initiated the launch of Accion’s Venture Lab, a program dedicated to providing seed capital and management support to financial inclusion start-ups.
In July 2012, Schlein coordinated the Colombia-based launch of the Avanza pilot program, which aims to increase the efficiency of the microlending process and improve client protection.
Schlein supervised the 2013 launch of Bridge, a financial services company with a focus on provincial banking and social impact in the Philippines.
Awards
In 1995, Mr. Schlein received the Chairman's Award for Excellence, the highest award presented by the SEC.<ref name="Bloomberg" />
Personal
Schlein is married to Lisa Jordan Tamagni and resides with his family in Brooklyn, New York.<ref name="About Michael" />
