Michael J Scanlon(born December 3rd, 1988) is a collegiate rugby player who founded Lewis University Rugby. Biography Early life Scanlon, the second of four Children, was born in Evergreen Park, Illinois to an Irish American father and an Italian American mother. He was raised Catholic and graduated from Brother Rice High School. Scanlon played high school rugby for Brother Rice winning state championships in 2004, 2005, and 2006 before finishing 3rd in 2007. He was also Captain of the Academic team. He subsequently enrolled at Lewis in the fall of 2007. It was there he founded the Lewis Rugby team. Career Scanlon attempted over the course of 6 months from early September 2007 to late february 2008 to start the Rugby team at Lewis. He got the team up and running in time to play 6 regular season games in the spring of 2008. The beginning of this club did not go unnoticed as Scanlon became the youngest Carfu representative in History(19), and had started only the 8th team admitted to Carfu in the 75 year history.. The team, although 2-6 (with the only two victories coming via forfeit) early on, should figure prominently into the 2009 league play. Scanlon also served as coach while there and is the second leading scorer in Lewis University Rugby History behind only Daniel Robert Lopez. Scanlon is now a student and Rugby player at the University of Miami and plays for the Florida U-20 Select Side Thunder. He is continuing his ambassadorship to the game of rugby for the state of Florida, contacting several high schools advising them on beginning Rugby teams and is helping in the state's efforts to begin Flag Rugby in local high schools and grammar schools. Scanlon also continues to advise Lewis on the status of their rugby club and acts as an advisor to local colleges in Illinois, Florida and Indiana on starting rugby clubs. He is considered one of the games most important young ambassadors.. Scanlon has been featured many times on LUTN- Lewis University's Television network. He has also been featured on WLRA, The Flyer, and WJOL.
