Mercedes Haefer

Mercedes Renee Haefer is a hacktivist, journalism student, convicted computer hacker, and self-proclaimed member of Anonymous. In July 2011, she was arrested along with several others (collectively known as the PayPal 14) in connection with a 4-day long denial-of-service attack against Paypal, eBay, and others. These attacks were, at the time, part of a larger effort known as Operation Payback. Haefer was also involved loosely with Occupy Las Vegas and helped to organize a zombie walk to protest corporate greed held in 2011. Haefer was interviewed by Jon Ronson for his 2015 book on the shaming culture of the internet, So You've Been Publicly Shamed for her insight into the doxing and Internet vigilantism perpetrated against Adria Richards that occurred in the wake of Donglegate. |
