Background
Melvin Pather was born in Durban on 10 August 1983 and is of Tamil descent. He matriculated from Glenwood High School with distinctions in Art and History , and studied Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology. He obtained tremendous graphic design experience in the private sector in various companies he worked for, whilst pursuing his passion for artistic creation. Significant Contributions to Art and Society
Melvin has made significant contributions to the world of art through his creativity. He has used some of his artwork in conjunction with projects running the BAT Centre and the KZNSA Gallery. He was one of the participating artists at the 100 Great KZN Artists Exhibition, where the KZNSA gallery celebrated one hundred years. His most significant mural works can be found in the Elarish Restaurant in the Bluff, Durban. He painted numerous murals here as a commission from Anthony Perumal, the owner of Elarish. He was also one of the artists commissioned to paint a mural in the Chatsworth Youth Centre that was built for the youth after the tragic Throb Nightclub incident in Chatsworth whereby many school children were killed in a club stampede. The Chatsworth Youth Centre was opened by the former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela in 2004. Melvin attended as one of the VIP Guests and found the opening a rewarding experience that highlighted a positive turn for the greater Indian community in Durban. He has sold many of his artworks on a local and international level.
Personal Interests
Melvin has also written a book as a contribution to Art and the many perceptions of the artistic creative process called Incomplete Insanity. He has delved in numerous projects from music videos (often participating as an actor in EighteenEighteen music videos) to videoart and installations. He has also worked on various comic and illustration projects and has recently started a comc strip teaming up with his childhood friends, titled Brown Town. His other major interest includes photography and is almost always seen with a camera in his possession. He believes that it is important to continually be working on ideas and thoughts and as such carries around a sketchpad as an exercise to note down the various inspirations you find going through daily life. He is also an Xbox and Computer enthusiast.
