Mekael Shane

Mekael Shane (also known as Mekael) is an American poet. He was born on October 17, 1970 in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was raised until age six. He lived the remainder of his childhood in Dallas, Texas, before returning to Indianapolis as he approached his teenage years. Mekael was a student at Park Tudor School, which is where his interest in literature began to take shape. After graduating from high school, Mekael attended Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. It was while at the university that his passion for the literary arts began. After his departure from Central State University, he returned home to Indianapolis where he committed himself to working with its inner city youth.
Career
For twelve years, Mekael worked with youth who were remanded to the juvenile justice system of Indianapolis. The organization that he worked for, Project IMPACT-Indianapolis, sought to create a positive effect on the lives of the teens that it served by providing them with education and life-skills lessons, as well as computer and vocational training.
After leaving Project IMPACT-Indianapolis, Mekael, a retired U.S. Army Reservist, dedicated himself to the fight against cancer, motivated by the loss of friends and family members. It was the loss of his mother that heightened Mekael’s desire to join the cancer fighting community and so in 2007 he relocated to the state of Georgia and founded the Joyce L. Maul Foundation to honor her name.
The Joyce L. Maul Foundation’s mission is to promote the importance of the early detection and screening for cancer. Mekael joined forces with the Lance Armstrong Foundation and established the LIVESTRONG Army-Dunwoody, which is located in Dunwoody, Georgia. Mekael is a member of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, and supporter of the Stand Up To Cancer organization.
Literary works
As a poet, Mekael began collecting his works in an organized format in 1996. In 2006 Mekael created 2007’s The Genesis A Collection of Poems by Mekael, which earned him a nomination for the Georgia Author of the Year Award (GAYA) for Poetry from the Georgia Writers Association.
In 2008, Mekael created a second collection of poetry titled, The Road to Damascus Poems by Mekael, which garnered him a second nomination for the Georgia Author of the Year Award (GAYA) for Poetry from the Georgia Writers Association. Soon after the publication of his second collection, he began work on his third collection, Love Letters the Select Collection by Mekael, which made its debut in the summer of 2009.
While at work on Love Letters the Select Collection by Mekael, Mekael was simultaneously piecing together his fourth project, publishing Exegesis A Decade of Poetry by Mekael, a collection filled with poetry compiled from his first three books.
