MDX file (Media Data eXtended) is a non-documented format that specifies a single binary image file of a CD, DVD, HD-DVD or BD-DVD disc. MDX file includes the magic number "MEDIA DESCRIPTOR" appearing in the beginning of the file and all data from the disc. This format is very similar to MDS/MDF format and supports almost all of MDS/MDF format features except that all data is in one monolithic file only. MDX file contains metadata about the original media, specifically the position of the layer breaks, sessions, tracks and different other physical parameters of disc. An MDX file is then used to emulate original CD/DVD disc with optical drive emulation software. It is called an MDX file because of its implemented file extension .mdx. It could also be described as being an archive file containing all data from a CD/DVD disc. Support MDX file can be created by optical disc imaging applications. The MDX file format is utilized by the commercial optical drive emulation software DAEMON Tools Pro versions and Astroburn Pro CD/DVD burning application. Currently this CD/DVD image format is supported only in DAEMON Tools and Astroburn software.
