MD is a unit commonly used to measure wire lengths. MDs are mostly used in lengths of one unit, hence it is sometimes referred to as 1MD. History 1MD was designed to be a length slightly larger than half the depth of a standard AV/computer 19-inch_rack. Uses *1MD = lengths to wire microphone wire from a XLR_connector back plate to echo cancelling equipment within a 19-inch_rack. *3MD = lengths of microphone wire from the floor to the centre of a table in order for a microphone to be centred on a table. Benefits The use of md lengths provides a/v engineers the ability to measure wire lengths without having to consider "slack" as the engineer would round up to the nearest md. Conversion 1MD = 525.3mm ≈ 20.68 inches
