Background
Matty G the Musician grew up in Yonkers, New York and has been a self-taught musician since the tender age of ten when he received his first guitar. Eventually obtaining a keyboard and a drum set, Matty G became well-versed in music. In high school, he fooled around with bands, including his own solo project, Bellevue , in 2005.
When Matty G began attending Iona College in 2004, he decided to put his music career aside in light of the new chapter in his life. At Iona, Matt chose a major in Marketing and was a member of Iona Players and the Marketing Club. On top of school-related activities, Matty G was also employed at both HOT 97 FM and NEWS 12 Westchester. " keep my options open and enjoy my last year at Iona," the 21-year-old said.
Early in 2007, however, Matty G decided to take all of his instrumental skills and combined them into a one-man band. "I had one idea after another," Matty G said regarding how he found the perfect way to play all three instruments at once. Matty G finally formulated a genius plan, fixing a drumstick to the head of his guitar and putting a snare drum on the floor.
Matty G has since performed covers of today's most popular songs. His first YouTube video features "The Legend of Zelda" theme song. He made his debut as a One Man Band at the "Mr. Iona" talent competition in 2007. His performance of Nelly Furtado's "Maneater" and P. Diddy's "Last Night" enthralled both the judges and the audience, and he won the contest.
Matty's G's YouTube premier with the "Legend of Zelda" paved the way for many other unique covers, such as Rhianna's "Umbrella," which gave him the No. 5 spot on CollegeHumor.com in July 2007 after it was nationally showcased by the web site. A month previous, Matty G had created a YouTube channel, coining his new name, "Matty G the Musician."
In January 2008, Matty G the Musician was at his highest level of internet popularity to date after uploading his cover of Chris Brown's "Kiss Kiss" onto YouTube. That video was watched 400,000 times on YouTube that month, making Matty G the #7 Most Viewed Musician on YouTube in January 2008, behind only six musicians, including Soulja Boy and John Mayer.
Since then, he has begun performing live at major universities, such as Iona College, where he opened the show for comedian D.L. Hughley, The University of Scranton, and the Rochester Institute of Technology.
