Matthew Smeaton, born 6 November 1977, is a New Zealand sailor and sail maker. Raised in Dunedin, Matt started his sailing at Vauxhall Yacht Club on the Otago Harbour. He attended King's High School, Dunedin from 1991 - 1995. In 1996 and 1997 Matt trained as crew and skipper with the Youth Scheme of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in Auckland. Auckland continues to be his base when he is not working overseas.
He worked as head sailmaker for Team ABN AMRO in the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006. ABN Amro had two entries in the 2005-2006 round-the-world sailing race: ABN Amro 1 won the race convincingly, with their sister ship ABN Amro 2 finishing fourth, behind
Matt was also a sail maker for D-Juice Dragons in the Volvo Ocean Race 2001-2002.
He now works for North Sails New Zealand as loft manager.
Matt has overseen the building of sails for Kokomo, Georgia, Mari-Cha III, Mari-Cha IV, Pindar, Ranger, Velsheda.
Recently Matt Smeaton sailed as part of the crew on board the Pindar Volvo 60 during Antigua Race Week 2007.
