Martin 'Marty' McLoughin from Liverpool is a retired competitive distance runner. McLoughlin was fourth at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in the 10 000 metres and was the British 10 000 metres road race champion in 1994. He has finished fourth in The Great North Run. Early years McLoughlin is from Bootle in Liverpool, the son of a Ford car worker father and a care worker mother. His running talents were manifesting themselves when at 15 he was the Liverpool Catholic Schools 800 metres championship. He left school at 16 and did not progress any running ambitions further for a number of years. Running career McLoughlin took up serious running at the age of 20 running for Liverpool Pembroke and Sefton Athletic Club. He was running for England within three years. Two years later he represented England in the Commonwealth Games and finished fourth behind John Solly. In the 1987 World Cross Country championships in Warsaw he won a team silver medal finishing behind Kenya with Ethopia finishing third. In 1988 he won the Belfast half marathon in a new Irish all comers record of 62.57. He missed out on an Olympic spot when he finished fifth in the British trial. In 1989 he ran the Great North Run for the first time and finished fourth behind El-Mostafa Nechchadi of Morocco. He ran the second fastest time in the world in 1987 for 10 miles, 46.26. In 1993 he won a team bronze medal in the World Cup Marathon in San Sebastian. The race was won by team mate Richard Nerurkar. In 1994 McLoughlin was the British road race 10 000 metres champion, ran at Milton in Stoke on Trent. In the same year he was voted by Athletics Weekly the top British road runner of the year. He continued to run as an international for England until the age of 38 before he retired.<ref name = "lps" /> In 94 & 95 he was the first Britain to finish in the world Half Marathon Championships. He was ranked in the British top 10 for 10,000 metres for ten consecutive years 1985 to 1995.<ref name = "lps" /> Life outside running Marty McLoughlin works as a Customer Service Officer in a Jobcentre. His interests are reading, music, and trivia with a particular passion for The Beatles. He is a fan of Liverpool F.C. and was a regular attendee at Anfield in the 70s and 80s. He is divorced and has two daughters.
