Mathew Weir

Mathew Weir, born in Ipswich, England in 1977, is an English artist. He studied at the Royal College of Art, London.
Work
Weir is best known for fusing imagery of ceramic figurines with his archive of landscapes to create complex narratives with exquisite yet melancholic auras.
He has said both his paintings and sculptures "formulate visual ideas where words or language may fail, or seem insufficient",.
By using fragments of pre-existing imagery to make his oil paintings. He draws on a specific tradition of 18th and 19th century decorative art like the ceramic figurine as well as more culturally loaded objects..
Weir's paintings often reference the excess of death-obsessed, overwrought Victoriana with red-faced Victorians and peculiar penitents rise up from among the writhing foliage in his paintings.
