Masters of Media is a collaborative blog of the M.A. New Media & Digital Culture students of the University of Amsterdam. The blog launched in September 2006, as part of the New Media Practises Course taught by Geert Lovink, the founder and coordinator of this project. About 50 university researchers, either nearing completion of their master’s degree or recently graduated, maintain this new media issues blog, recognized as among the leading academic blogs on the subject of digital culture. Books, articles as well as new media objects are critiqued and discussed. M.A. New Media & Digital Culture The MA New Media is one of the Master’s programs of Media and Cultural Studies, which is part of the Faculty of Humanities. The various courses also attract new media-oriented students from the two-year Research Master’s in Media Studies programme. New Media Practices The course New Media Practices, taught by Geert Lovink, looks to develop an understanding of the ways media, particularly new media, address people, and articulate social and cultural practice through diverse forms of engagement. To achieve this, course participation is specifically linked to interaction with the objects of study. Combining this experience with theories of new media not only helps the students develop a broader understanding of advancements in technology, it also provides a basis for in-depth perspectives on shifts in our culture. In this course the new students get their first contact with the Masters of Media blog, but will maintain the blog even after completion of their M.A. thesis.
