Massachusetts Association of Math Leagues

The Massachusetts Association of Math Leagues is an association of math leagues in Massachusetts. Because most Massachusetts math leagues serve a relatively small region, MAML organizes individual and team competitions to involve students throughout the state.
Massachusetts Mathematics Olympiad
In late October, nearly 3000 high school students across Massachusetts participate in the Massachusetts Mathematics Olympiad, Level 1, which consists of 25 multiple choice questions to be completed in ninety minutes. Approximately 100 students with the highest Level 1 scores are declared finalists; approximately the next 100-150 students are declared semifinalists. In early March, all finalists are invited to take the Olympiad, Level 2, which consists of eight multiple-part free-response questions to be answered in three hours. The top 20 scorers on the Level 2 examination receive cash prizes ranging from $250 to $50.
The Mathematics Olympiad is written and coordinated by the MAML Executive Board, with sponsorship from the Actuaries' Club of Boston. The contest writing duties are given to a different league each year, with one teacher/coach from that league having primary responsibility for producing the contest.
State Championship Math Meet
On the last Friday in March or the first Friday in April, top-ranked schools from each math league in Massachusetts compete at the State Championship Math Meet. After the competition, the top four large schools, top three medium schools, and top two small schools advance to the New England Championship Math Meet, run by the New England Association of Math Leagues. Other schools that come close to qualification may also be invited to the New England meet at the discretion of MAML. Each league champion within the state has an automatic invitation to NEAML.
The State Championship Math Meet is coordinated by the MAML Executive Board. The site is meant to rotate between leagues, but it has been held at Shrewsbury High School for the past three years.
Math Day
The top three teams in each size division are invited to "Math Day," a celebratory awards dinner. Beginning in 2008, the 20 high scorers on the Olympiad Level 2 were invited to Math Day. Scholarship winners from state mathematics teachers' associations are also presented their awards at math day.
Executive Board
Each math league in Massachusetts is expected to send one representative to all MAML meetings. The primary meeting each year is held in December. The finalist and semifinalist cutoffs for the Olympiad are determined; the date of the state meet is finalized; the date of Math Day is chosen; and the dates for the next year's Olympiad are set.
Additionally, there is a meeting in August where packets of information concerning the Olympiad are assembled, and a second meeting in late September when the contests themselves are packaged. Other meetings are called as needed.
