Masoumeh Ataei

Masoumeh Ataei is an Iranian campaginer against gender-based violence, who became an activist after being subjected to an acid attack.
Acid attack
In September 2010, Masoumeh Ataei was subjected to an acid attack by her ex-husband's father. The assailant was her father-in-law, who attacked her for divorcing his son, whom Ataei described as "violent from day one." Ataei described the experience, saying that her father-in-law visited her at her family's home, opening the boot of his car to reveal two wrapped gifts. He asked her to close her eyes to receive the gift, then poured acid over her face. Ataei ran around her garden screaming until her family returned, washed her with water and took her to hospital.
Aftermath
Ataei lost sight in both her eyes as well as suffering burns to her face and hands, but was able to fight for custody of her son.
She has since become a vocal campaigner for victims of acid attacks and was featured in the BBC 100 Women project in 2015.<ref name=BBC/>
