Maruful Islam Jhalak

Maruful Islam Jhalak is a Bangladeshi Philanthropist and youth leader. He is the current National Director of Junior Chamber International Bangladesh, founder president of Junior Chamber International, Dhaka Uptown chapter and the vice president of Telekom Asia Pte. Ltd. Maruful was also one of the founding the country’s first ever ‘Digital Village’ in Parameshwardi, Shonarga, Narayanganj. The large scale and success of the project has made the locals christen the village as ‘JCI Village’.
Early life and education
Jhalak spent his early life growing up in Chashara, Narayanganj. His father, Advocate Shamsul Islam Bhuiyan, is the president of Shonarga thana wing of Awami League. His mother, Professor. Dr. Shirin Begum, is the president of Narayanganj Mohila League. He received his higher education from the Notre Dame College, Dhaka. He started working for social causes there as the president of ISCA, raising funds for acid victims and organizing blood drives for dengue infected patients. He graduated from North South University in 2006, also serving as the vice president of Young Entrepreneurs Society. He moved to the UK to pursue an MBA degree from Cardiff.
JCI Village
Jhalak leads the JCI Village team. JCI Village is a prototype sustainable village. The village had a primary school and a mosque as the only major infrastructure, it is inhabited by about 5000 people approximately. According to the study held by JCI the village lacked proper growth as the school was understaffed, the farmers were below the poverty line and the unemployment was high. JCI picked active members of the community to activate the local community.
Jhalak and the team created major projects such as Shupeo, a project to increase the safe drinking water supply to the village. Shobujayon, a tree plantation program to teach school kids about the necessity of trees. In 2016 they launched Shushastho on world oral cancer month with the motto ‘Say no to oral cancer’ at the village, which screened and treated oral cancer patients in the city. These project was done with the help of Telekom Asia and Albion Laboratories.<ref name=":0" />
