Martin Scales

Martin Scales is a British diplomat who was the Deputy High Commissioner of Malawi 2014-2016 and was later a Queen's Messenger.
Early life and education
Scales was born in 1965 in Wakefield, England to parents Anne Scales née Clegg and Rex Scales. He has one brother, Andrew Scales. Prior to university he studied at Upper Wharfedale School and then went onto Ermysted's Grammar School to complete his A-Levels. He graduated with a BSc (Hons) Geography, PE and Sports Science Degree from Loughborough University in 1986.
Career
Scales joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1997 and served as the Jordan Desk Officer as his first job. He then moved onto Crisis management and Contingency Planning Desk Officer 1999-2001. In 2001 he undertook his first posting abroad at the British Embassy In Oslo for three years. In 2005 he served in the Frankfurt Consulate General for one year. He then got posted to Gibraltar where he worked in the Governor's Office. After three years in Gibraltar he became Head of Corporate Services in Helmand PRT and served in Lashkar Gah for one year.
In 2012 he worked as the Indonesia Desk Officer and lead on the organisation of the 2013 State Visit of the President of Indonesia. From 2014-16 he undertook a posting to Lilongwe, Malawi as the Deputy High Commissioner.
Personal life
He is married to Karen Scales with two children, Danielle and Charlotte. He is also the Ambassador of Chigoli, Malawi's leading NGO Football Academy.
