Gerard Scharfenberger is a conservative politician and the Mayor of Middletown, New Jersey. He is a member of the Republican Party. In 2010, Governor Chris Christie appointed Scharfenberger to the position of Director of the Office for Planning Advocacy. Early life and education, and career Scharfenberger was born in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor's degree in history. He earned a master's degree from Hunter College and received his doctorate in 2005 from the CUNY Graduate Center with a dual focus on historical archaeology and cultural landscape studies. He currently is a member of the adjunct faculty at Monmouth University in West Long Branch. Middletown Township Committee Elections Scharfenberger was first elected to the Middletown Township Committee in 2004, together with his incumbent running mate Thomas G. Hall. He defeated his Democratic and Independent opponents by a decisive margin of more than 3,000 votes. Tenure Dr. Scharfenberger has been serving on the Township Committee since 2005. He served as Mayor in 2007, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2016 and Deputy Mayor in 2006 and 2009.
