Marilyn Fierro is the highest ranking woman in the world in Isshin-Ryu karate and a seventh-degree black belt. She started martial arts training in September 1972 and was introduced to Isshin-Ryu in March 1973. She opened the Smithtown Karate Academy with Adler in 1978 and then took over in 1980. She was promoted in 1996 to the rank of Nana Dan on Okinawa and became the first Isshin-Ryu Master woman recognized on Okinawa. She was a pioneer of the woman’s “Attack Prevention” program in Long Island and created a video tape about safety for girls which is now in 11 Long Island high schools. Media She has written articles and appears on many shows about martial arts. Her first article in 1982 was called “The Limitless Spirit of the Martial Arts.” Her articles have appeared in Black Belt, Official Karate, Action MA, Samurai and other magazines. Awards She has received many awards including the Bushido Award (1985) from the Greater Long Island Karat Championship, the Samurai Spirit Award (1990) at the Northeastern Karate Open and induction into the National Jewish Museum Sports Hall of Fame (1997). She was inducted into Don Nagle’s Hall of Fame (1997) and the first woman inducted into the Isshinryu Hall of Fame.<ref name="auto1"/>
