Marian McGuire was a film actress and who filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court in April 1939. At issue were nude photos she posed for, which she claimed were taken for art and not commercial exploitation. The $25,000 suit named Warner Brothers Camera Club, the Hollywood Photo Supply Company the Hollywood Devlite Company, and others as responsible for violating her right of privacy. McGuire claimed that she had been induced to pose nude by the camera club on the premise that her photo was to be used solely for private exhibition among club members who shared a passion for photographic art. Instead her photo was used as an exhibit in show windows and also sold to the public. McGuire contended she was embarrassed by this and was subjected to public scorn afterward.
