Maria Elena R. Enriquez

Maria Elena R. Enriquez is an active trial lawyer and medical practitioner in the Philippines. She is one of the few doctors-turned-lawyers in the country.
Early life and education
Enriquez was born in 1953. She attended the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, the oldest medical school in the country, and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in 1978. She passed the Physicians Licensure Examination, the board exams for Filipino doctors administered by the Professional Regulation Commission, in 1979. She also earned a Master of Arts degree in Hospital Administration (M.H.A.).
Enriquez specialized in Anesthesiology. She passed the Diplomate board examinations of the Philippine Board of Anesthesiology in 1985.<ref name="a"/>
Enriquez enrolled in the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Civil Law, the oldest law school in the country. She obtained her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1997, graduating as class valedictorian. She was admitted to the Philippine bar in 1998.<ref name="a"/>
Career
After medical school, Enriquez practiced medicine and anesthesiology in several hospitals and clinics in Metro Manila for several years. Upon admission to the Philippine bar, she was hired as an Associate at Romulo Mabanta Buenaventura Sayoc and De Los Angeles, the third largest law firm in the country.<ref name="a"/>
She rose to prominence as one of the private prosecutors during the impeachment trial of former Philippine President Joseph Estrada.<ref name="a"/>
