Marcie Garcia

Marcie Garcia is an American-born hockey writer covering the National Hockey League for NHL.com.

Writing career
Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1974, she grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago and became fascinated with the Chicago Blackhawks as well as the Edmonton Oilers—especially Wayne Gretzky. In high school, Garcia worked at a newspaper, The Times of Northwest Indiana which included the south suburbs of Illinois. She answered phones until she asked the sport's editor if she could start writing for the often-neglected community sports section. He agreed, and a passion was discovered. From there she obtained several freelance jobs writing for online hockey magazines. Her hard work paid off as she gradually submitted features for NHL.com as "special from", to attaining her own column in the 2006-07 season called Lifestyles, a weekly column featuring the off-ice personalities of NHL players. It is in its second season.

Writing style
Known for her down-to-earth and fresh approach to writing, and serious side, often tackling sensitive topics such as players who have dealt with cancer in their families, and death, like the Snyder family who she has since befriended who lost Dan Snyder of the Atlanta Thrashers in 2005, these pieces have proven to be uplifting and encouraging to those who are all too familiar to these tragedies. Garcia wants to show the humanity of these sometimes portrayed "goon" athletes, and wants to show that these people are just regular guys who have lives outside of the game.

Garcia resides in Chicago and continues to write as a Correspondent on NHL.com.
