LSE SU Economics Society

Founded in 2005, the LSE SU Economics Society is a society at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) under the LSE Students' Union. The society's chief aims are broadening their members' Economic horizons beyond the classroom and providing an outlet for both intellectual debate and light-hearted Economics discussion.

The society’s ethos is rooted in theoretical Economics; it has coordinated several student-led economic discussions and debates, whilst hosting lectures by several prominent economists. Past speakers include Amartya Sen, Richard Layard, Alan Krueger and Charles Bean.

Objectives and Activities

For the 2008/09 academic year, the Economics Society at the LSE has set new targets to ensure the upmost welfare of its members. The main events and developments for the year 2008/09 are:

1. Talks from various external guest speakers.

2. Presentations from various governmental and non-governmental bodies.

3. The 'Economist in Residence' lecture series.

4. Trips to the Bank of England and the 'Square Mile'.

5. Firm wide presentations from various recruiters.

6. The Annual Economics Society Debate Cup.

7. The Economics Society Christmas Ball.

8. Help Sessions for various Economics Modules.

9. The 'Rationale' Magazine.

10. The LSE Student CPI Project.

Current Committee and Structure

The committee of the Economics Society for the year 2008/09 comprises of:

Under this executive committee, the Economics Society has a well-structured committee with diverse divisions to ensure the proper functioning of the society. These divisions are:


Events Division - Director & Committee Officers

Officers in this division are responsible for organizing and coordinating our signature event- ‘Economist in Residence’ lecture series, the Annual Economics Society Debate Cup and the guided trips to the Square Mile and the Bank of England. Division members shall also be involved in organising regular social events such as balls and Economics Discussion Forums.


Corporate Relations Division - Director & Committee Officers

Officers of this division are responsible for regular liaison with firms, governmental organisations and non-governmental organisations regarding possible events or presentations that they wish to hold for the Economics Society members. Corporate Relations Division will be the first point of contact with the recruiters also.


Marketing and Public Relations Division - Director & Committee Officers

This division seeks to promote the profile of the Economics Society and also carry out an active marketing campaign. This includes the designing, distribution and promotion of all of the Society’s promotional materials. Besides that, officers of this division are required to maintain public relations and keep the general public well informed about the society's events and developments.


IT Consultant

One consultant is required to be in charge of all the technical demands of the Society, working closely with the Marketing & PR Division. Roles include graphics, web designing, online marketing, and other IT technical problems.


Besides the main committee for the Economics Society, there are two sub-committees for the 'Rationale' magazine and the SCPI Project.


'Rationale' Magazine Committee - Chief Editor and Editors

This committee is involved in handling the 'Rationale' magazine that has published its second issue in October 2008 and is set to publish its third in January 2009. The Chief Editor is the leader of the team.


SCPI Project Committee - Econometricians, Statisticians and Data Collectors

This committee is involved in the Student Consumer Price Index Project, which is about measuring and analysing the inflation level at the LSE on a regular basis. Econometricians and Statisticians are involved in the mathematical side of the project, while the data collectors are the ones who shall provide the input data.
