Lowyat.net

Lowyat.NET (or LYN in short) is a Malaysian tech enthusiast community founded in November 19, 2002 by Vijandren Ramadass (se7en) and he is also the main Forum administrator. As of July 2008, Lowyat.net is ranked by Alexa as the 23rd most viewed site in Malaysia and the most popular IT-related discussion board in Malaysia.

The website takes its name from Low Yat Plaza, a leading shopping complex in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, commonly associated with the sale of technology-related merchandise.

Overview

Lowyat.NET has no relation whatsoever to the Low Yat group of companies or Low Yat Plaza. Lowyat.NET is owned by Vijandren Ramadass (se7en), and the bandwidth is sponsored by ipserverOne. And no, (se7en) is not related to Tan Sri Low Yat either.

Centred around resources pertaining computers and other forms of electronics, the site comprising a main site featuring technology related news and articles, and an active forum community. Lowyat.NET now features technology review articles, and has recently launched sister sites such as "Multiplay" (featuring gaming news), "Shrine" (featuring Japanese anime/manga news), "Shutter" (featuring photography news) and "Wheels" (featuring automotive news).

The Moderating Team
Lowyat.net is not only watch by (se7en) himself but a supervision of some of his own people where he calls them the Moderating Team which consist a number of staff and moderators to help (se7en) keep a good close eye on the forum.

Forum


Lowyat.NET's forum is one of the most heavily visited sections of the website. Operating under an Invision Power Board platform, the forum consists of a myriads of specilised subforums devoted to topics related to technology, trading and off-topic subjects.

As of August 9, 2008, Lowyat.NET's forum boasts an estimated 150,808 registered accounts and over 7.8 million posted messages. By July 15 2008 at 10:53 PM local time, Lowyat.net had the most user ever online with 3,228 user's. The Kopitiam subforum, a subforum geared towards miscellaneous discussions and random topics, is recognised as the most posted section in the forum, accounting for 1.6 million posts. The Trade Zone subforum trails Kopitiam with an overall number of 6,500,000 posted messages.

Issues
The Lowyat.NET forum has been known to encounter controversy with regards to security and defamation.

On April 3, 2004, "Mohd Sharilwan bin Mohd Sidek", a registered member of the forum who goes by the names "Power Edge" and "BiuBiu", embarked on the forum's largest known incidence of fraud by cheating off over RM140k for bulks of BBA Nvidia Geforce 5400 & ATI 9700PRO graphic cards that were never delivered to payers. It was later revealed Mohd Sharilwan had conned an estimated RM70k in total from other Malaysian forums, and remained at large, as of 2005.

On September 28, 2007, Lowyat.NET received a "Notice to Take Down" letter addressed to its owner and administrator via e-mail from Solicitors Lilian & Associates acting on behalf of Kenny Wong (identified on LYN as kennywongyf) and Chris Lau (gtoracer1) of "Mobile Care Stop", a mobile phone retail shop in Subang Square, Subang Jaya, Selangor. The letter threatens to join the administrator and owner of Lowyat.NET in a High Court action for damages from a thread Goh Chee Phen (AntonioKane) posted on the unsatisfied service of Mobile Care Stop.
