Lost money scam

Lost money scams are a collection of scams involving people who claimed to have lost money.
Vending machines
Many vending machines post numbers they can call to recover lost money. Additionally, vending machines positioned inside of an organization, such as a school, university, shopping mall, etc, may have a customer desk acting as an intermediary where customers can claim lost money. Scammers will make fraudulent claims of lost money repeatedly at different locations.
Payphones
Most payphones have a repair operator number where one can call in the event money is lost or a call disconnected. The scammer will generally claim an expensive phone call, perhaps international. Most phone companies have a policy to either send a pre-paid calling card for the amount of their phone call, or to credit their home telephone account if applicable.
Lost cash
Scammers will call numerous businesses, such as retail stores, bank branches, etc, claiming they lost cash on the premises, and asking if any cash was turned in. They are hoping for the small chance that someone else did legitimately lose cash and that it was turned in. They will also leave their phone number just in case cash is later found.
Grocery store spoiled food fraud
In this case, the scammer will legitimately buy food, prepare and eat it, and later go back to the store claiming the food was spoiled (and they threw it away because of odor or some other reason). They will generally get a refund or replacement.
Credit card losses
A somewhat related scam is making a fraudulent chargeback on a credit card, claiming something they bought online was never delivered, wrong item was delivered, etc.
