Lost in Hollywood

"Lost in Hollywood" is the final song on System of a Down's fourth album Mezmerize. The song was written by guitarist Daron Malakian who grew up in Hollywood, California and the slow paced minor keyed song is about the narrator's disdain for Hollywood. The song is one of System of a Down's most melodic songs, including slow multi-part harmony with Tankian and Shavo providing back-up vocals, softer singing, and less aggressive drumming and guitar.
Additionally, there is some speculation that this song is loosely based upon J. D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye due to several connections with the book in the lyrics of the song. Most notably, the one singing the song seems to be lamenting the subject's choice to go to Hollywood, similar to Holden Caufield's dislike of his brother moving to Hollywood to pursue his career as a writer.
The song was sampled by rap duo Capone-N-Noreaga in 2007, entitled simply "Hollywood" to promote their upcoming album Reporting The War; however, the song was excluded in final production.
