List of National Hockey League controversies

This is a list of major controversies relating to the National Hockey League.
Wayne Gretzky
When the Edmonton Oilers announced their plans to trade Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings, the announcement caused extreme outrage across Canada, with many urging for a lawsuit so as to keep Gretzky in Edmonton.
Lockouts
Due to a lockout, the 1994-1995 NHL season was reduced to 48 games. Another lockout canceled the 2004-2005 NHL season entirely.
Fighting
For many years, the allowance of fighting in ice hockey has been disputed. Due to this controversy, fighting was removed from the video game NHL '94.
Phoenix Coyotes
When the Winnipeg Jets moved to Phoenix, Arizona to become the Phoenix Coyotes, the NHL was given full property of everything related to the Jets. The Jets would return in 2011 after the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg.
