In the United States the term life bumming is used to describe a care-free, sometimes bohemian, lifestyle. It is often characterized by employment in low-wage, but otherwise fun or exciting positions like teaching surfing, skiing, or snowboarding. Until recently, the lifestyle was more often associated with university student gap years. Life bumming is now increasingly popular with adults of independent means. Oftentimes the individual is a trustafarian, and seeks to keep up the appearance of living a meager lifestyle for personal or political purposes.
Jurisdictions with generous social welfare systems are often popular destinations for life bumming, since they often provide free of low cost health care, free or reduced public transport and other benefits.
For students or recent graduates, life bumming offers an opportunity to travel, meet new people, and have fun, all while earning a marginal living.
