Obooko

obooko is a book publishing and promotion project that provides an opportunity for new and established writers from all parts of the World to self-publish and promote their work in PDF ebook format free of charge. The website removes many barriers and makes it easy to put work in front of an audience, and the website's user-friendly approach allays many of the fears that prevent new writers publishing their work.
The public view of obooko is as a free membership site where work by many popular writers including Paoulo Coelho, Lewis Shiner and Peter Watts can be downloaded free of charge.
Free ebooks means that anyone, regardless of means, has access to quality writing. This is especially beneficial to people who cannot afford to buy printed books: those around the world who struggle on a low income or benefits; students and people living in under-developed countries.
By offering free copies of work, under standard copyright or creative commons licences, authors benefit from direct feedback from members, which can be used to address creative and technical issues before listing for sale on retail sites or sent to publishers for consideration. For those on limited budgets this can often negate the need for professional editing.
All authors are eligible to be considered for an obooko prize which is to be awarded annually from 2010 for the most popular ebook in each genre/category. Unconventionally, the award will be judged by members only, not a panel of judges.
