LGeneral

LGeneral is a turn-based strategy computer wargame engine heavily inspired by Panzer General.

Overview
LGeneral is turn-based, set on operational level hex maps. One plays lone scenarios from either Axis or Allied side and against a computer or human opponent. In Campaign Mode, the player assumes the role of a German general against the Allied computer.

The basic design of the game shares some commonality with the popular Squad Leader board game series, with a wide variety of units available.

LGeneral is an operational-level game, and units approximate battalions, although unit size and map scale from one scenario to the next are elastic. While the names and information for the units are reasonably accurate, the scenarios only approximate historical situations.

The default installation uses the original Panzer General data which means LGeneral uses the same scenarios, campaigns and graphics as the original game. Though because LGeneral is a gaming engine it is not that hard to create mods for it because of its open-source character.

An example of a mod is the so-called APP-6A NATO mod. This mod transforms the default installation into a more realistic looking wargame because it uses the official NATO symbology and a military map style.

Realism
The game engine supports different terrain types, morale, fuel, different attack and defend types, move types, firing ranges, line of sight, experience, entrenchment and many more features. So the game does support a quite realistic simulation as long as the applied game data has been made well. The standard Panzer General game data includes hundreds of historical World War II units and quite a few scenarios. Whether these units and scenarios are entirely historical accurate is not sure, but they do give you a good feeling of the situation.
