Laura Vargas Villaveces

Laura Vargas Villaveces (born 1986) is a Colombian graphic artist and illustrator based in Antwerp, Belgium. Her work explores various subjects, but mostly she specializes in children’s illustration.
Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Vargas Villaveces holds a bachelor degree in fine arts from University of Los Andes and a diploma course in Children Art Illustration from the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University. In 2013 she obtained a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, from Boston University. She has also undertaken post-graduate studies in Dutch as a Foreign Language from the University of Antwerp.
Work
Based in Belgium, Laura Vargas Villaveces' illustrations are graphic reflections on daily life subjects such as immigration and motherhood. Her images incorporate memories from Colombia alongside life in Antwerp. Her iconography also covers botanical illustration, natural history, cartoon, pattern design, and more recently, diversity. She works with numerous techniques such as watercolor painting, embroidery, classic drawing, mural painting, and digital tools.  
In 2013, she wrote and illustrated her first book, De vuelta. She also illustrated, Steffen en de droomballon by Harry P.A. van de Water in 2016, and Iedereen is Kampioen by Steven De Peuter in 2019. Locally, she has been commissioned for several projects by the Red Star Line Museum, Antwerp Libraries, ‘T Werkhuys and Merksem District Town Hall. She has conducted several collective projects alongside the Integration Service of the City of Antwerp and some local Dutch schools to help immigrant adults and children share their life stories overcoming the barrier of language through art.
