Justin Lee Stansfield

Justin Lee Stansfield is a Belgium based visual artist born in the UK.
Biography
Justin Lee Stansfield studied art and design at the Burnley College for fine art in Burnley, foundation in art and design at the in Blackburn, fine art at the University of Wolverhampton, set and theater design at the City of Westminster College in London, philosophy at the East London University in London and received first class MBA and UAL diploma between 1987 and 2000.
Work
While living in London in the late 90’s, Stansfield returned to art-making in an attempt to resolve/explore/bridge what he saw as a growing chasm between mainstream media platforms and their audiences. This, along with a separate incident which the artist describes as an epiphany, culminated in Stansfield painting again after a five year hiatus since leaving University. As the artist has said, an informed citizenry was no longer required, and mass entertainment had become politically aligned to both political and corporate power. For a brief period Stansfield shared a studio-space with the London-based Iranian artist Shahin Afrassiabi. In 2004, Stansfield left London for Andalucia, Spain. His work became less ideologically motivated and the paintings became colour-muted, as if faded by the sun. The work became more focused and a clearer conception of what he wanted the work to do more apparent. After a number of trips to Belgium in 2006-2007 he moved there in 2008 and currently resides in the city of Antwerp. Though his work appears simple and child-like, the motivation behind the works, Stansfield has said, are driven by socio-political and philosophical concerns.
Justin Stansfield has published two photo books as a personal tribute to Serena Shim and . The first book, The Death of Michael Hastings, consists of a photograph of Stansfield's painted portrait of the late American journalist, . Each right-hand page shows the painting in a different position, either upright, sideways, or upside down. So as to create a roll or spin effect when the pages are quickly turned.
The second book, POPAL (pictures of paintings and light) is a collection of digitised photos of paintings placed in different settings and illuminated by daylight, electric light or both. The works in the photos stand in space as objects and are lit as if they were an actor or prop upon a stage.
