2019 Hong Kong protests
Lau Chak-kei gained infamy in Hong Kong after pointing a shotgun, loaded with beanbag rounds, at protesters in Kwai Chung on 30 July 2019, relatively early in the protests. This act led him to become a widely hated figure in Hong Kong. However, he was hailed as a hero in mainland China.
His actions in Kwai Chung were defended by the Hong Kong Police Force. He appeared on Xinwen Lianbo, a flagship news programme on China Central Television (CCTV), on 14 September 2019, alongside assistant district commander of Mong Kok Police Station, Lee Chung-kin.
Lau was subsequently invited by the Chinese government to participate in the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China among about 10 Hong Kong policemen.

Lau Cha Kei has made several controversial speeches. Critics have considered his speeches as promoting human rights violations and hate speech.
* He said curfew should be imposed in Hong Kong for easy control.
* He claimed the judges in Hong Kong encourage people to be criminal.
* He said the anti-mask law that bypassed the Legislative Council as "very effective".
Following the District Council elections on 24 October 2019, during which the pro-democratic camp won a landslide victory, Lau falsely claimed on his Chinese social media account that 1.6 million ballots were invalid. The Registration and Electoral Office subsequently issued a press release rejecting these claims. Pro-Beijing Hong Kong lawmaker Michael Tien criticised Lau for "inciting conflict between Hong Kong and the mainland", spreading rumours, and criticising government officials while working as a civil servant.<ref name="oath"/>
