Location
Krislund is nestled in the Little Sugar Valley in the Nittany Mountains, east of State College, Pennsylvania. Roaring Run, a spring-fed, clear and beautiful trout stream, runs through the length of Little Sugar Valley, at an altitude of 1,200 feet above sea level. The ridges surrounding the valley climb to about 2,000 feet. Big Kettle Mountain is infamous to campers for its "Bald Spot" - a deposit of limestone rocks and boulders at 2,200 feet, which is a beloved hike destination.
The forest in Little Sugar Valley is composed predominantly by Eastern Hemlock, the State Tree of Pennsylvania. However, the Eastern Hemlock are under attack by the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, a non-indigenous, parasitic insect. Because the Adelgid nests beneath the leaves of the Hemlock, a sprayed pesticide would have no effect in terminating the parasites.
Also present in the woods at Krislund are many white pine and white oak trees, among many other species.
Krislund is home to many varieties of wildlife that have been seen by groups of campers, including porcupines, white-tailed deer, beavers, frogs, salamanders, snakes, and black bear. The only venomous snakes in the area are the timber rattlesnake and the copperhead. Timber rattlers have occasionally been seen sunbathing at the Bald Spot. Krislund hosts a wide range of different birds; one particular favorite are the killdeer that nest in the open space in front of the Arts and Crafts barn.
Activities
All camp activities take advantage of the natural surroundings and have the purpose of drawing campers nearer to God. Some camp activities include hiking, rock climbing, caving, canoeing, the climbing tower, swimming, and several high ropes courses. Camp lodges and cabins can be rented throughout the rest of the year for retreats and vacations.
Structure
Camper units are divided by age and defined by their sleep structures. The cabins, tents, and wagons units are separated by gender, while Mini Kamp and the Daks group do all their activities with boys and girls together.
* Mini Kamp - Kindergarten through 2nd grade (stay in winterized cabins)
* Cabins - 3rd & 4th Grade (stay in summer cabins)
* Tents - 5th & 6th Grade (stay in canvas, platform tents)
* Wagons - 7th & 8th Grade (stay in Conestoga-style covered wagons)
* Daks - 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th Grade (stay in Adirondack shelters)
