Killing of Barel Hadaria Shmueli

On August 21, 2021, Barel Hadaria Shmueli, an Israel Border Police sergeant, was shot in the head during ongoing protests at the Israel-Gaza border fence. Shmueli, while in position along the Gaza-Israel barrier, had been outflanked by the Gazans, who were then able to shoot him through the firing hole of the barrier. He was evacuated to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba by helicopter to undergo surgery, and nine days later, on August 30, Shmueli died.
Shmueli, 21, was a resident of Be'er Ya'akov in central Israel and is survived by his parents, two sisters and a brother. His funeral at the Kiryt Shaul Cemetery in Tel Aviv was attended by thousands of mourners and he was eulogized by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.<ref name=":0" />
